I drove out a bit late because of an almost-flat tire that needed attention, and then managed to drive right past the reservoir without seeing it. This species loves to sing while high up in pine trees. But I was delighted to see a Black-chinned Sparrow near the shore; this is only my eighth sighting of this species.

It isn’t just the birds that seek the higher ground, but also the reptiles. A Red-backed Fairywren was calling from the top of a bush and to the right a dragonfly clung to a branch. We encountered five goannas that had found the higher ground by swimming and then stood up on their hind legs to assess the situation!

This is perhaps almost entirely due to the Common Starling , a species that is, over much of its range, an introduced pest. Starlings and mynas are adaptable, attractive and clever species. Male Red-winged Starlings (left) have glossy-black heads, while the females (right) have grey heads. Starlings have a bad rap.

There are quite a few raptor species around Skukuza. Most likely, the devil, not god created this species. African Spoonbills seem unfazed by large reptiles. While some bustards are the largest bird species capable of flight, the Black-bellied Bustard is only mid-sized. I guess you just get used to them with time.

Well, it took about ten minutes to find out, as I was sitting in the RV, right at water’s edge, photographing a lovely pair of Rufus-banded Honeyeaters , when a small, 2-meter-long Crocodile came rushing up out of the water, right at my door! There is an old dead tree top, right on the edge of the canyon, that looked like it would be a great spot for the passing birds to make a stop. The majority are clearly Mallards , followed by Garganeys , with one and possibly more Green-winged Teals , also Ferruginous Ducks … Surprises among them are one Common Shelduck , a species that most likely breeds some 15 mi from here (and my first shelduck of the year) and an even greater surprise: two Eurasian Wigeons.
