This cruel, cruel fate we endure in western New York torments man and beast alike. We were at Big John’s pond and a red tailed hawk came out of nowhere and we thought he was going to fly right into the blind. On Sunday at Kissena Park I saw five species of sparrows. Wicked, right? Larry starts us off right with an owl that makes birders drool: I was able to see and photograph many great birds in 2014 but my Best Bird of the Year would have to be the Great Gray Owl , the largest Strix in North America. Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting. Isn’t that neat?
