It sounded birdy and I was game. You can park by the side and check the Boljetinska River Canyon at your right, a true geological history book. Other species include Grey Wagtail and Marsh Tit. is known as the northernmost range of holly ( Ilex aquifolium ), a relict evergreen species, in Serbia and the only site in Djerdap.

Located right where the Yangtze River enters the sea (and dividing it into two parts), it is mostly flat farmland. A number of species use Chongming as a wintering spot, not just the Cinereous Vultures I already mentioned in a previous post. Ferruginous means rust-colored, but I have yet to see any rust looking as good as this species.

After several game drives, once again we are at the front gate of the Gir National Park in the state of Gujarat. This park protects the largest remaining tract of dry deciduous forest in the west of India, offering visitors 37 species of reptiles, 38 species of mammals and, not to be forgotten – almost 300 bird species.

Finally in 1799, the first visitors on this volcanic land were a group of French seal hunters who were after the fur seals that can be found hauled out on the beaches for fur and oil, which almost wiped out the local population of the species.

Getting to actually see four species, in the last two weeks, and to hear two more is almost unheard of in my experience. The Great Horned Owls that live in the palm trees right above our RV have returned and brought with them a pair of fledglings. Several times, a couple of the juvenile owls would take off in a game of chase.

It is swimming with its body half-submerged (typical for the species and yet, so strange for songbirds) and often diving. This species is reasonably easy to find if you are in the right kind of habitat – but I am rarely in that type of habitat. I found out on my second day in Mkuze, a great game reserve in South Africa, earlier this year when on my first dark night, poor visibility, uneven ground and unsteady footing resulted in a twisted ankle and a day in camp keeping weight off it. And it did so in spectacular fashion, in the form of a mixed-species feeding flock, or a bird wave.
