Their proclivity for living in small social groups was fact that I learned much later. One of these methods is where one bird will fly down thru an arroyo, and spook out the game for its waiting members of the pack.

I’m a big fan of the antelopes, a group that is most commonly associated with Africa but which also occurs in Asia and, if you stretch the term to be cladistically meaningful, Europe and North America. By this I mean applying the term antelope to cover all of the family Bovidae, which would include the sheep, goats and ox.

They are crossing one or two at a time.

Ndumo Game Reserve lies in the Easternmost part of South Africa, close to the border of Mozambique and Eswatini. It is not particularly big but has a reported 430 bird species including migrants, though during my short stay it seems I missed most of the key attractions among them. I found out on my second day in Mkuze, a great game reserve in South Africa, earlier this year when on my first dark night, poor visibility, uneven ground and unsteady footing resulted in a twisted ankle and a day in camp keeping weight off it. And it did so in spectacular fashion, in the form of a mixed-species feeding flock, or a bird wave.

Although Prince Edward Island and Marion are close enough, only 21 km apart, Prince Edward is free of invasives, besides four plant species, so offers a great comparison for success. We gamely hit a bunch of spots, had to completely bail on others, as it was getting close to 50 degrees and that nasty wind just would not let up. In the end, I ended up with 9 species, 4 of which were new to the list, the Black-crowned Sparrow Lark, White-checked Bulbo, House Crow , and the Indian Silverbill. Scotland Species: 94.

The inscrutable species frustrated me and I found myself especially stumped by the difficulty I had distinguishing them, and wildly mystified by the excitement they inspired in my fellow-birders.
