By the time this post goes live I’ll be boarding an airplane to sunny Florida to begin the festivities. The birding in North Carolina, for reasons both of my own making and the vagaries of southern “winter” weather, has been a bit slow. Wow, is it Space Coast time already?

It’s a treatment plant on the Florida model, a vast manmade wetland through which treated water circulates for several weeks before passively flowing into the St. As with most watery, natury, places in Florida, the birding is always good and often spectacular. You do, however, see them in January in places like Florida and North Carolina. What I found was often interesting in ways I couldn’t imagine and they both confirmed and expanded my findings. Historically, you don’t see vagrant kingbirds in New York in January. Obviously, one year cannot tell us.

For instance, #400 for is Peregrine Falcon , which I first spotted in the Florida Keys. While filling the tank I spotted a number of circling raptors and, grabbing my binoculars, found a trio of Peregrines circling with Sharp-shinned Hawks , Turkey Vultures , and Magnificent Frigatebirds (it was the Florida Keys, after all).

Ali Iyoob is looking to break the North Carolina Big Year record of 351 this year. Rangel Diaz is doing a big year in Miami-Dade County, Florida, hoping to reach 300 species, and keeping a blog about it. Andy Wraithmell is doing a Florida Big Year in 2013 and, again according to eBird, had reached 112 species as of 8 January.

And in the free-flying aviary that is Florida you can easily be shocked by what you find, but White Ibis seem to show a surprising affinity to the local fast food joints. Here in the non-Floridian Southeast we have sparrows and starlings and pigeons.

Ali Iyoob is sitting pretty at 230 species in his North Carolina big year during which he is trying to break the state record of 351. He better watch out though, because another birder in North Carolina also has reported 230 species so far this year! As of the end of March they had already reached a whopping 652 species

But the bird that most reminded me that I was south of home was the Brown-headed Nuthatch , which I had only seen before in North Carolina and Florida. I just wish the sky behind this one had been bluer. They sure are a fun bird to watch and their rubber-ducky calls are distinctive and helpful in finding them.

Way down in the Florida they have the bizarre Snail Kite and the gorgeous Swallow-tailed Kite , both of which have made their way up as far north as North Carolina, though the former only once. We in the south are stuffed silly with kites. This is a bird that does not mess around.

The return home included a total of 5 ½ hours of flight delays, one missed flight, and we subsequently missed the entire town of Charlotte, North Carolina. You can argue that large waders of Florida are flashier or that the secretive Bachman’s Sparrow elicit more respect, and sure, Pine Warblers nest as far north as southern Canada so how can they really be southeastern, but if you raise these points I think you fail to realize how truly prolific Pine Warblers are in the south.
