Ali Iyoob is looking to break the North Carolina Big Year record of 351 this year. Rangel Diaz is doing a big year in Miami-Dade County, Florida, hoping to reach 300 species, and keeping a blog about it. Andy Wraithmell is doing a Florida Big Year in 2013 and, again according to eBird, had reached 112 species as of 8 January.

Ali Iyoob is sitting pretty at 230 species in his North Carolina big year during which he is trying to break the state record of 351. He better watch out though, because another birder in North Carolina also has reported 230 species so far this year! As of the end of March they had already reached a whopping 652 species

The ability of knots to successfully raise their chicks is very sensitive to snow conditions, the availability of insects as food, and the presence of predators, all of which are affected by climate change. Red Knots have already lost more than 80 percent of their coastal habitat in Florida, New Jersey, and New York.

Get on the plane anywhere from North Carolina to Texas or Florida and we are talking three to four hours. We raised bins, and voila, Collared Forest-falcon ! All birders should say yes because the small country where I live is easier to visit than a lot of people think. A juvenile Collared Forest-falcon looks for prey.

Sitta canadensis isn’t just irrupting out of its far northern home but exploding southward, with reports in every southern state except for Florida, including birds on the outer banks of North Carolina, on Grand Isle, Louisiana, in a suburb of Atlanta, and on the Gulf Coast of Texas.

You can argue that large waders of Florida are flashier or that the secretive Bachman’s Sparrow elicit more respect, and sure, Pine Warblers nest as far north as southern Canada so how can they really be southeastern, but if you raise these points I think you fail to realize how truly prolific Pine Warblers are in the south.

I am really excited to say I’ll be heading down to Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival in Titusville, Florida, next month as a correspondent for 10,000 Birds. It won’t be my first trip to Florida. I can’t wait to reacquaint myself with Florida Scrub-Jays and Sandhill Cranes.
