With 154 eBirded species almost single-handedly spotted by the UK expat Geoff Laight, the Paljuvi is the latest addition to the top-5 list. We were looking for turtle tracks, but my eyes were drawn to the dozens and dozens of birds feeding and resting as the sun brightened the sky. Looking for turtle tracks (but also birds and shells). Allen’s turtle transect was 2.5 No, we didn’t find any new turtle tracks, but we did record 18 bird species.

Water quality was good that day, and we could perfectly see the waving eelgrass, the freshwater fish species, the adorable turtles. Oil begins to wash up on the beaches throughout May and June of 2010 May 6, 2010 Oil washes ashore on the Chandeleur Islands off the Louisiana coast, an important nesting and breeding area for many bird species. Officials reported 48 marine mammals, mostly dolphins, and 87 dead sea turtles during the first two months alone.

Only the resident shorebirds remain during these winter months, but there are also Brown Boobys diving for fish close to shore at the moment and we rarely see them during the rest of the year. The risk of bird or turtle nests being crushed by vehicles above the high tide mark is a possibility, but of course it is hard to police these rules.

In the parking area I immediately encountered a pair of Australian Brush-turkeys as well as a new species for me, a Grey-headed Robin. This huge member of the Australian robin family is really tame in this carpark, making it probably the easiest place n the world to see the species (other than the Tableland it is only found in New Guinea).

The catch is, the station often pumps some small fish into the pool, hence the jolly bird party. The Dalmatian Pelicans line the lake shore, especially by the small beach opposite Limnochori village, where local fisherman tie their flat-bottomed boats and, after fishing – feed the birds with small fish, not worth taking to the market.

As a result, I had 15 species in the first hour. Laight has recorded some 100 species here, including Slavonian (Horned) Grebe and Red-rumped Swallow (the first is a rare migrant/wintering species only, while the second one is an uncommon breeder). Other herons, egrets, gulls and terns are a surprise at this time of the year.

BIRDING SEA WORLD One would expect a marine-themed attraction to deliver some sweet bird species. I obviously didn’t anticipate a pelagic vibe, but even fish hatcheries can offer excellent birding. My best wild bird of Legoland had to be some kind of heron hunting among the turtles and young alligators in a cypress swamp.
