It was fun and I ended up with 124 species. And, amazingly, despite visiting less parks and having to end my day even earlier than last time to go pick up my son, I ended the day with the same exact number of species. Neither an Osprey carrying a fish nor an Osprey carrying a stick is unusual.

Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. jory Mar 7th, 2011 at 8:08 am Best bird, for sure, was FISH CROW.

I briefly entertained the idea that I had found a rare species never before seen in New York but quickly came to my senses and realized that I was dealing with a leucistic individual. This first birding vignette is actually from just before the weekend, when I was at Alley Pond Park on a day that I was miraculously released from work a tiny bit early and was hoping to find a Yellow-throated Warbler but settled for a Swamp Sparrow by Little Alley Pond. At the same location a Chipping Sparrow also cooperated for pictures.
