Drifting slower and looking closer, we observed a tiny Malachite Kingfisher hunting in the sheltered shallows. The now familiar sound of a pair of African Fish-Eagles dominated the soundscape. We had several close views as the raptors would pick up discarded fish from the many fishing boats, a relationship our guides capitalized upon.

Water quality was good that day, and we could perfectly see the waving eelgrass, the freshwater fish species, the adorable turtles. In addition to interesting fish views, the glass-bottomed boat tour and clarity of the spring in general provided an unparalleled opportunity to see diving Double-crested Cormorants and Anhingas.

There are plenty of lookouts and shelters, but there is no drinking water available at the toilet facilities, so you need to carry plenty of water. This 90 acre lake, managed by Arizona Fish and Wildlife is about a 45 mile drive from Tucson, and 9 miles from Mexico, as the Chihuahuan Raven flies. The layout of the lake has many small fingers that provide shelter, shallow water and many dense areas of Willow and Cottonwood trees. One raft along had over 380 birds in it.

As I continued south I stopped at each small jetty to see which species were roosting and the sea was substantially rougher than on my previous visit. There wasn’t much around, and aside from a lifer Yellow-bellied Bulbul the two most impressive species were heard not seen – a Blue-headed Pitta an a Banded Kingfisher. Two highlights of the walk back were a bright green Greater Green Leafbird and a Lesser Fish Eagle following the road above our heads. Did I mention them?

This species, the smallest, is endemic to North Island and should be fairly common in the wet lowland forests.
