Add those life mammals to the life birds I already expected to see, and I was practically vibrating with excitement. I have only ever seen one Peregrine Falcon, and the scoters and guillemot were lifers for me! The road was lined with scrub and short trees, and I spotted not one but two new sparrow species.

Peregrine Falcons breed on the sheer cliff faces of Santa Cruz; you may meet one at eye level on the bluff trail north of Scorpion Ranch, where this photo was taken (I highly recommend this trail, by the way, if only for the views). I can’t finish this post without mentioning marine mammals.

There was also a mammal jawbone in the pellet too. I wasn’t as interested in the mammal jawbone, but it totally piqued his interest. Oehlenschlager apologized that he couldn’t say the exact species of bat. Who cares, the fact that he could narrow it down to 2 species was quite amazing to me.

The best bird was one lovely Common Chiffchaff that was very hard to locate in the thick crown of an old juniper tree, followed by one mysterious small falcon. In all that swirling of swallows, I am not certain was there a third species, so I keep watching. It disappeared behind a tree in a split second, showing me only its back view.

Other species I was looking forward to as possibilities included Anhingas , Magnificent Frigatebirds , and seeing as the sun was supposed to shine, some raptors soaring. Creatures like another species of monkey, White-headed Capuchin , Cebus capucinus , which are also known as White-faced Capuchins.

I want to reach 500 birds in the ABA, get my Queens list to 295, see a total of at least 500 species, and get my World Life List to 1,100. But how did I see so many species this year?

This morning, they have seen some 10,000 Broad-winged Hawks , mixed up with two dozen Swainson’s Hawks , several Mississippi Kites and one or two King Vultures , Swallow-tailed and Double-toothed Kites , Merlins and Peregrine Falcons. Or a mammal. Or even those pooie reptiles. And I saw my first Blackburnian Warbler!

It was a Benguela Nino year, and pelagic seabirds were in super-abundance in the south eastern Atlantic, with the total of species by variety and number exceeding all expectations for the birders on the inaugural trip as we pitched and wallowed about in the rolling swells on our way out to the trawling grounds.

North of Dunedin is Orokonui , a wildlife Sanctuary modeled on Karori with a fence to keep introduced mammals out. The sanctuary has a population of Little Spotted Kiwi, as well as a range of other rare species such as Takahe , Stichbirds , New Zealand Falcons , Brown Teal and Red-crowned Parakeets. You really are spoiled here.

Even on the approach to the gorge we encountered a Black-breasted Buzzard , Black Kites , Whistling Kites and Brown Falcons. There is a list of the birds, mammals and other creatures that you may encounter, but to your right there is an active Great Bowerbirds ‘ bower. White-necked Heron , Great Egret and Australian White Ibis.

Despite the golf course, this place host all manner of birds and mammals. In fact, we saw two species of monkey, our only sloths, lots of coatis, and my rarest ever mammal sighting—a Jaguarundi —right on site. As the name suggests, the National Bison Range is mostly known for its large mammals. To my disappointment the biggest and most visible species I saw was the introduced Common (Ring-necked) Pheasant , and my first lifer was the equally introduced Gray Partridge.
