Sunday afternoon, Corey finally managed to connect with a Great Shearwater in Queens from the whale-watching boat, easily his Best Bird of the Weekend! How about you?

Of course, unexpected experiences such as this are one of the great appeals of birding. Those early trips to Pillar Point (and the photos I took) were an important step to becoming a semi-competent birder.

Visiting this area for the first time after seeing it for month was a crazy experience. It was the start of the shark season, which meant I saw my first Great White Shark attacks on Northern Elephant Seals , but it was also the best season for whales. The seas were glass still, and far out we could see whales, dozens of the things.

Isla Isabel – Mexico’s Galapagos

Lastly, due to its previous inaccessibility to humans and the absence of natural predators, the wildlife is bizarrely unafraid of humans, allowing for a truly unforgettable experience. Swimming with a whale shark on the boat-trip to Isla Isabel. It is a wonderful spot to watch the humpback whales breach in the crystal-clear waters.

An Amazing Boat Ride from Santa Cruz Island to Ventura Harbor

It took me awhile, but I managed to get on quite a few, especially when the boat slowed down to go check out some Humpback Whales and a huge number of Common Dolphins. Sooty Shearwaters and a Western Gull fly back the aftermath of a Humpback Whale breaching. Humpback Whale Megaptera novaeangliae. It was amazing.
