All the so-called grey geese – Greylag, Bean, White-front, Lesser White-front, Swan – look very much alike, and it takes experience to identify them by their calls and their shape and size. As the BTO notes, wild vagrants are usually found mixed in with Brent and Barnacle – both typical carrier species.

During a two-year long moratorium on hunting in T&T, I had some of the most incredible birding experiences. One of those species, the Forty-spotted Pardalote , is found only in a small part of Tasmania. It was, recently, pardaoltes that got me thinking about this. What a treat!

Most likely, all individuals of a given species have very similar genes guiding very similar developmental processes, but produce different results because the plasticity itself is selected for. Mostly the ducks were Red-breasted Merganser and Greater Scaup , the two most prevalent species on the pond, but there were a few other birds mixed in as well. He lives in Forest Hills with Daisy, their son, Desmond Shearwater, and their two indoor cats, Hunter and B.B. It was a great experience. What a spectacle indeed.
