” Most shrugged and said very few US falconers fly owls because they’re slow and some species you can only hunt at night, that wouldn’t be much fun to watch. All apprentice falconers are allowed only 1 of 2 species: American Kestrel or Red-tailed Hawk. Falconers keep their wild caught birds until they die. Not always.

The idea of Lost Animals was conceived after the publication of Extinct Birds (2001), a 400-page, four-pound book on 75 extinct species. And so, Fuller embarked on a new initiative—locating and researching photographs of lost birds and, expanding his scope, of mammals. Other species are less known.

In 2012, I reviewed The Jewel Hunter , an absorbing narrative in which author Chris Goodie travelled throughout Asia, Africa, and Australasia to observe and photograph every Pitta species in the world. Hummingbird species, on the other hand, number in the hundreds.

I new him because we enlisted his Dryfus Lion and one of his tigers to carry out experiments with bones (this is something archaeologists do).

He started experimenting with silk screening to produce most of his designs, including the images in Birds & Art. White article on bird feeding stations. A tradition was born.
