So, all this makes birding this place an occasionally less than pleasant experience. The family has about 37 species, but that includes several fulvettas – only 21 of the species have “parrotbill” in their names (and frankly, the bills of fulvettas do not look like those of parrots at all). “See, only three!”

The birds have to be correctly drawn, show the right colors, postures, and be painted with care but when it all comes together, beautiful bird art is in a category of its own. Posters of three groups of birds are currently available; toucans, trogons, and hummingbirds. These are all of the toucan species that occur in Costa Rica.

We had a small group of three or four repeatedly calling and posturing as they moved through the canopy. A number of families exist on Trinidad but not Tobago. Most notably the family of New World Vultures. This bird forms part of the “trilling” group of subspecies, and some already refer to it as Trilling Gnatwren.

Getting to actually see four species, in the last two weeks, and to hear two more is almost unheard of in my experience. The Great Horned Owls that live in the palm trees right above our RV have returned and brought with them a pair of fledglings. That was no deterrent from landing right in the middle of the road.

In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers. It did not take long before we had a family group of Tufted Jays right by the side of the road (KM 216) and an uncommon Gray-collared Becard at the same spot.

Large picnic pavilions border one side, and while I was there the largest was commandeered by a family party. This is a protected area that includes the Los Cusingos Bird refuge, where we were guided by Andres Chinchilla, a young man who as a child ran around the farm where his family worked, and was to become this incredible bird refuge. His years of experience in this area were quite obvious as we found 62 species in one morning.
