Various species can be found in dry grassland habitats in Africa, Eurasia, and Australia, so it is fun for a North American to stumble upon this not frequently-seen-bird. Then off in search of the main event! Scissor-tailed Kites – while not threatened now – are a vulnerable species.

This section of the Great Northern Highway has an impressive list on eBird of 191 species along the length of highway that crosses Roebuck Plains. They have arrived in large numbers this time, but as with all of these bird species that arrive during flood events we don’t know where they came from. Great Egrets in flight.

Global Big Day has become an annual collective event in May that encourages thousands of people to watch birds on the same date. and ended later that eveing with a final total of 154 species. As far as promoting birding goes, the only thing better might be October Gobal Big Day ! Speckled Tanager was one of those birds.

Being an island, Mauritius has its share of endemics, extinct endemics (the dodo again), and introduced species. The Red Fody is an introduced species, though from nearby, sort of (Madagascar). Of course, the Common Myna is not a native species either. I saw a few of each group, with the obvious exception of the second one.

In the area live 15 species from Tennessee’s threatened and endangered list, as well as 11 aquatic species from the federally endangered list. As the ponds came into view, a Great Egret took flight, and several Black-crowned Night-Herons stood hunched over the water, unwilling to break their own silhouette in the event it would jeopardize their chances at snagging a final meal before daylight took hold. And in another month, when the rainy season makes my birdbath less attractive, that number will drop to around 5 species.). This is how it looks like: Or at sunset: A species I did not come for from Shanghai is the Black-crowned Night Heron. Its species name graydoni is in honor of Philip Newenham Graydon (1864-1940), a British planter in Sabah. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

This past Saturday, 10 October, was my favorite birding event of the year. It is a birding challenge where a team of birders stays in one spot for the entire day to see how many species they can record for their location. This Pine Warbler was one of four that stopped by, and also one of only four wood-warbler species for the day.

Chief among these are three trees, known here as Huizaches (Sweet Acacia, Vachellia farnesiana), Granjenos (Spiny Hackberry, Celtis ehernbergiana), and Nopales (Prickly Pear, various species). But the area would not be home for more than 120 species, if it were not for those thorny trees. But the Granjeno will eventally outgrow it.

In the end, the event gathered 26 birders who occupied the entire upper terrace of a floating tavern at Usce (the confluence ) park, overlooking the islands. There are numerous species of raptors around Broome including Black Kites and Whistling Kites. There have been some success stories over the years and last year there was one such event. The best they can do is make a run for the vegetation at the top of the beach or huddle down in a tyre track.
