According to Couzens, after laying the eggs, females sometimes immediately abandon their first mate and pair up with another male. But maybe that is actually a good thing.

A half-hour boat cruise around Eastern Egg Rock gave me a glimpse of seabird paradise, then yanked it away. There are boat trips to Eastern Egg Rock, as well as to other small islands. Our recent bush-walking has involved some long muddy walks and are always productive as far as birds and wildflowers go and we have found several species nests. Right now we’re pretty much a three species town, Ravens with a chance of Hoary Redpolls and a sprinkling of Rock Ptarmigan. (I I smashed the High Arctic Christmas Bird Count record this January 2nd by managing to find all three species here in town. Typically there are four eggs in a brood especially on good year.

Well, we got to see the iguanas until they both suddenly realized that a whole boatload of people was drifting right up to them at which point they skedaddled, but by that point everyone with camera had already managed several shots and those without had enjoyed great looks that they probably would not ever forget.

I found this little grouping of Guillemots, with parents, babies and even an egg. While there were way less Puffins than any of the other species, they are still so much fun to see. The boat Captain got us right in close. When were visiting Smoo cave, this one was right in the cave entrance. Flying in formation.

Once you travel further north from Broome there are numerous opportunities to observe this species and any fresh water body is worth checking. Thankfully the red crest is very helpful in identifying this species. They often make a shrill sound in flight and often don’t fly very far.

Here they are a common breeding bird, one of our two species that migrate from here to Europe and then south. I had hoped to have some Semipalmated Plover chick photos for comparison but as of last night they seem to be still at the egg stage. These ones had a head start, nesting right near the shore.
