These consist of Red-crowned Crane , Blakiston’s Fish-Owl , and Steller’s Sea-Eagle – all among the most massive and spectacular representatives of their families. Several more hours of driving on icy roads took us to Washi-no-yado, a traditional Japanese B&B near Rausu, the ‘place to be’ for Blakiston’s Fish-Owl.

Feeding birds is generally regarded as a harmless past-time, a wholesome way for people to share nature and enjoy wildlife with the family. Another example would be the Eagle Lady in Alaska. The Eagle Lady has also died and now the town bans the feeding of eagles and other birds. She added more corn.

Luckily, I didn’t have to look hard to find the Dusky Eagle-Owl’s nest. My group, led by Rockjumper guide David Erterius, started off with a great view of this Brown Fish-Owl , perched on a low wall in a thicket of vines near the entrance to our route. It was a big owl. Maybe it was the intimidating stare.

En route, the teenagers were chatting away when suddenly I screamed “Eagles!”, Bald Eagles ,” I said encouragingly/defensively/lamely. She landed on the water, dove, and disappeared from view; eventually she somehow returned to the air carrying a dozen slender fish, a feat which seemed aerodynamically impossible.

Two highlights of the walk back were a bright green Greater Green Leafbird and a Lesser Fish Eagle following the road above our heads. Fulvettas are also babblers, and the family, or families, are very well represented here – we also heard Short-tailed Babblers and Chestnut-backed Scimitar-babblers.

It was pretty awesome to see so many tuskers, as well as families of elephants safe in their special park. They had been the species I’ve most wanted to see, above any bird or fish or mammal, for many years, and they didn’t remotely disappoint. We were able to take a thoroughly enjoyable boat ride on Lake Chamo, whose shores teem with birds, including such typical African species as African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron the world’s largest, Yellow-billed Stork and the incomparable Hamerkop , a species in its own family.

This location is great as it is close to Jeanne’s Family, as well as a very short drive to the Billy Frank Jr. In 1974, Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge was established to protect the delta and its diversity of fish and wildlife habitats. On one occasion we saw a pair of Red Turtle Doves beside the fishing lake. There is a massive nest at the top of a tower beside the Sports Centre and a family of Monk Parakeets have taken up residence. There are White-bellied Sea Eagles in the area and it is likely their nest. Black-naped Oriole. Common Sandpiper. Monk Parakeet.

Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. Ethiopia’s Rift Valley lakes such as Lake Ziway and Awassa are famous for the gangs of Marabous that hang around the fish markets and allow close approach in the hope of a smelly handout.

As the national bird of Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, the African Fish Eagle is usually very busy whenever it stays in these countries, giving speeches, opening shopping centers, etc. Letaba is a largish rest camp in the North central part of the park. It is near a river, attracting some birds that like to eat wet food.

A large raptor just across the hilltop… Georgos says that at this time of year, we can expect Common Buzzard , Booted , Lesser Spotted and White-tailed Eagles. The bird is not showing again, so we use the elimination system: the first and the last are way too different, and dealing with the other two, we ID it as a Lesser Spotted Eagle.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist.

The distance to the coast for the pair of Brahminy Kites to collect fresh fish is not far. Brahminy Kites can often be seen perched on our street lights around Broome as they feast on recently caught fish too! As you can see above the Brahminy Kite does have some serious talons for catching fish! No more sleeping in there now!

For some reason, the largest member of the heron family is not called the Great Heron nor the Giant Heron but rather the Goliath Heron. The shrike family (Laniidae) has two genera, one (Lanius) with 32 species and one (Eurocephalus) with 2 species. A Barn Owl slept peacefully on the inside of the roof of a well-visited tourist cafe.

Raptors to look for in this reserve are Golden Eagle and Short-toed Snake Eagle , European Honey-buzzard and Peregrine Falcon. The commonest owls are Eurasian Scops Owl and Tawny Owl , while rare ones include Ural Owl and Eurasian Eagle Owl. About 120 species have been recorded so far. Use the Zrenjanin road to reach the area.

I haven’t done any surveys, but I would bet my binoculars that images and stories of hawks attract more attention and adoration from birders and the average person on the street than any other bird family. Families do not hike up mountains to sit all day on pointy rocks to watch woodpeckers. It’s a Bald Eagle, a hawk.

There was a family of Black-necked Storks that was initially a family group, but over recent weeks they have started to feed separately. There are a lot of small fish visible along the edges including Pop eyed Mullet. Pair of White-bellied Sea Eagles. They would come down and drink at both the salty and fresh water.

Last week I introduced you to a section of the Great Southern Rail Trail in Victoria from Foster to Fish Creek. I also often observe a pair of Wedge-tailed Eagles towards the hills on my left as I follow this section of trail. There is a family of feral foxes that I often encounter near Bennison Creek.
