On a recent visit to the Poo Ponds we came across a White-bellied Sea-Eagle enjoying lunch. These eagles are generally seen soaring along the coastline looking for food or nesting inland at the ephemeral lakes. They chase and successfully catch shorebirds as well as ducks and can be seen taking fish from the ocean as well.

Since 2006 a pair of Bald Eagles ( Haliaeetus leucocephalus ) nesting at Turtle Bay in Redding California have successfully raised a dozen eaglets! Not to disappoint, Patriot flies in a fresh fish from the Sacramento River. This year when the pair returned to Turtle Bay, they decided to build a new nest in an adjacent tree.

This is a juvenile Grey-headed Fish Eagle , unless it is another fish eagle like the Lesser (the lack of any grey head makes me doubt the identification a bit, but it seems juveniles cannot afford a grey head yet). Well, it seems such people exist.

The Brown Fish Owl is the most common of all Fish Owls. This D usky Eagle Owl is blind on one eye but still seems to be doing ok. This Indian Eagle Owl was relentlessly mobbed by some crows. Its ear tufts seem to be almost horizontal rather than vertical. Well, it mostly hunts at night, when it is dark anyway.

One Common Raven is disappearing towards its nest among the branches of the poplar plantation, only to reappear a few minutes later to give a good chase – aerial acrobatics included – to its first neighbour, the White-tailed Eagle which breeds in the vicinity.
