Then, at 6 PM, as the sun disappeared completely over the horizon, the ducks on the pond started massing on the west end of the pond, with many small flocks from all over the pond flying in to the west end until it was basically covered with ducks. It is an excellent site in the winter months in particular, when seabirds including ducks, divers and grebes are quite reliable here. At the tip of the pier, several birders had set up their scopes for sea watching and I spent some time here as well.

What I am getting at here is that I have seen lots and lots of Ruddy Ducks at Jamaica Bay but never one that looked like this particular individual. She was essentially cream-colored, much lighter than the typical female Ruddy Duck. Anyway, enjoy the images and keep an eye out for odd ducks! Go check it out! Get yours today!

The usual ducks were also present – Black-bellied Whistling Duck and White-cheeked Pintail. Both of these are dabbling ducks while the scaups are divers. Checking some of the other ponds revealed more ducks, namely a group of ten Blue-winged Teal and a staggering number of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks.

But two weeks ago, my Cuban ornithologist friend and church member went to check for ducks at the pond near our auditorium, after our Sunday service ended. Dark tips on the flight feathers? I once saw one in summer, two hours north of Morelia, but all my other sightings were at lower elevations, during the winter. A Zone-tailed Hawk !

That green grass is not a meadow; it is growing in water deep enough for swimming ducks. The dot in the center of the second photo is a lone Mexican Duck flying just over the water. It is too early for some ducks ( Wigeons , Gadwalls , and Green-winged Teals , plus Redheads and Canvasbacks with some luck) to arrive.

The Lezírias de Vila Franca de Xira (often and erroneously named Ponta de Erva after the most southerly tip) are an extensively farmed area in the north of the estuary. If you feel guilty about that, scan the river for ducks and geese and check out the muddy margins. If the place is jam-packed, it will be good.

While this one, with the black wing tips, was a Franklin’s Gull. several Surf Scoters (aka Surfing Ducks), and a Purple Finch I was finally able to distinguish from California’s ubiquitous House Finches (lifer!, Fortunately, I managed a decent photo to prove its passage: These were all Bonaparte’s Gulls.

Its pale, dark-tipped bill and light eyes contrast against the dark bill and red eyes of the Lesser Flamingo. Unable to explode from the water like a dabbling duck, they had to get up speed by running across the surface of the water. The Greater Flamingo has longer legs and neck. There were a couple of boats on the creek.

It is also the best place to find Common Golden-eye, Lesser and Greater Scaup, Common Merganser, Ruddy Duck, American Wigeon, Ring-necked Duck and Bufflehead. Roosting Silver Gulls on high tide If a Silver Gull goes to the rubbish tip there can be some good evidence as to where it has been by it’s appearance. One of the sweetest subsections of the duck family has to be the sawbills, formally known as mergansers. These narrow bills, hooked at the tip and set with numerous horny denticulations, are adapted for catching fish, a merganser’s primary source of food.
