My Best Bird of the Weekend was a heard-only Least Bittern calling from the Great Vly in my hometown of Saugerties where I was to collect my boy after a week with his grandparents. The bittern was nice but it was even better to see Desi even if he didn’t want to leave to head home to hot New York City!

Like we do during every dry spring, intrepid birders had lugged gallons of water into the woods and used them to fill a motley collection of garbage can lids in order to induce the birds to come down to bathe and drink. There were a host of birders and photographers at the Forest Park waterhole which had completely dried up. The back-stripes!

We were walking on the south side of the marsh, hoping to find some of the Common Redpolls that had invaded the New York City area the previous week when something made me look to my left and up and I saw a Short-eared Owl in flight that had evidently just been unintentionally flushed from the opposite side of the marsh by someone out for a stroll.
