When I resumed birding on my own in my late 20s in Queens, I always looked forward to seeing the several pairs of Ospreys nesting at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, a sight made all the more welcome after I learned of their drastic decline in the 1950s and ’60s due to the use of the insecticide DDT, followed by a remarkable population recovery.

Then rumors leaked out that at this same site the mythical Red Owl could easily be seen, Madagascar Serpent Eagle was breeding and other rare birds and lemurs abounded. As you can imagine, I was champing at the bit to get to this lost paradise and when I finally obtained the necessary permissions in 2008, it didn’t fail to astonish!

One of the highlights of the trip for me, and for some of the other media folks being hosted by the Fallon Convention and Tourism Authority, was a kayak tour of Tule Lake in the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge. The place was lousy with Swainson’s Hawks , and we may even have spotted a distant Golden Eagle.

The proprietor of our ecolodge guides my small group of birders up a steep slope where we see, just at the point where a scope view deteriorates into pixels, a huge bird—a Chaco Eagle, also known as a Crowned Eagle—on a huge nest. We are cautioned to keep the location of the eagle a secret. It would be nice to be there now.

In fact, the very first person to guess, Nick , managed to get the third quiz picture correct by calling it a Bald Eagle. Of course, that was the easiest of the three because though the bird in the image is captive, a bird that was injured and can’t be returned to the wild, Bald Eagles do occur regularly and naturally in Queens.

To top them all, the Sundarbans holds one of the last populations of the Endangered Masked Finfoot Heliopais personatus and was considered a safe stronghold of this highly threatened species ( source ).

We stayed at the Yellow Bay Biological Research Station, a cozy collection of buildings located, logically enough, on a slope overlooking a bay lined with yellow sandstone on the eastern shore of the lake. We also spotted Raven , Bald Eagle , Black-billed Magpie , and the inevitable Canada Goose.

Black-fronted Dotterels ran along the muddy edges collecting food and Double-barred Finch , Long-tailed Finch and Crimson Finch came down for a drink. Whistling Kites, Black Kites, Australian Hobby, Brown Falcon, Black-breasted Buzzard, Nankeen Kestrel and a Wedge-tailed Eagle all presented themselves during our visit to the Behn River.
