Elegant Tern in New York State

10,000 Birds

The next day many New York birders celebrated Independence Day by mobbing the flats where they all dipped. It is a bird of the Pacific coast of North and South America, breeding in western Mexico and southern California. The fact that I was obsessing over seeing one in New York State shows how absurd some of we listers are.

Tufted Duck at Huntington Harbor, New York

10,000 Birds

After a Tufted Duck was reported yesterday on Long Island I did some figuring and realized that I could go find the bird this morning before work and still, provided traffic wasn’t totally horrific, get to work in New Jersey on time. Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of August 2021)

10,000 Birds

All the best birds in my corner of New York over the last few months have been shorebirds, which explains why I dragged myself once again to Rochester’s fabled East Spit to bag a rare local Baird’s Sandpiper. Duckhorn Vineyards: Paraduxx Proprietary Red Blend (2018)

10,000 Birds

Invariably, when we get to Wood Duck ( Aix sponsa ) – a species rarely seen in winter here in eastern Upstate New York – someone will smirk and ask, “Do wooden ducks count?” And usually, it’s the same jokester who playfully claimed a heard-only Mute Swan ( Cygnus olor ) only a moment earlier.

Farewell to 2020 – Marin Brewing Company: Albion Amber Ale

10,000 Birds

In October of 2017, I took what was my first trip to California as a birder. It was our first real vacation away from New York together and we were really looking forward to it. We’d arrived in San Francisco just in time for the very beginning of the record-breaking 2017 Northern California wildfires.
