This large reserve has its namesake mountain range running right down the middle of it, and virtually no roads. The Picidae family was well represented, with both Gila and Ladder-back woodpeckers , as well a pair of Gilded Flickers all spending some time in this oak grove. And then the somewhat uncommon California Gnatcatcher.

Lakeview Oregon is located in central Oregon, just north of the California border, and is the highest altitude city in the state. During the weekend that I was there, it was announced that there were over 1300 fires burning just within the state of Oregon, not to mention California, Washington, Montana and British Columbia, Canada.

I happen to think the Crested Cara cara is one of the most beautiful birds in the falcon family. They stay here in Mexico despite the heat, and raise their families. California Quail are quite common here in the desert, but they are still absolutely beautiful, and fun to photograph.

Old World Vultures are nestled within the family Acciptridae along with the hawks and eagles. It’s actually a pretty classic example of convergent evolution, wherein two unrelated families of lifeforms evolve to fill the same niche independently. The California Condor has a story well-known by anyone with an interest in birds.

The California Quail ( Callipepla californica ) is the California state bird, inhabiting scrub, broken chaparral and woodland edges primarily in California, Oregon, Washington and Baja California. The family stays very close to cover for several weeks, getting bolder as the young develop.
