Ruili is a Chinese city right on the border to Myanmar, and a major border crossing. The proximity to the Myanmar border is reflected in the presence of Burmese Shrikes here – on the wrong side of the border, but it is well known that this species has never been particularly good at geography.

But another race of Red Knot make the High Arctic their home, the species that winters in the United Kingdom and coast of France, ssp islandica. With its striking combination of colour rings I suspected that it would be easy to find out more about this particular bird, and I was right. Black-tailed godwits winter in large numbers on the estuaries of both Norfolk and Suffolk, and we know that nearly all these birds breed in Iceland.

High up at almost 4500 meters, some Alpine Accentors were posing in the sunshine, justifying the description in the HBW as “large, attractive accentor” (though eBird seems to disagree, instead characterizing the species as a “stocky, stout, and unobtrusive bird”). I side with the HBW on this issue.

It’s a bang-up breeding year for super-endangered birds! The species, which migrates from the Russian Arctic to Southeast Asia, is down to about 200 breeding pairs in the wild, due to habitat loss and poaching. For the past several years, getting the birds to breed has been an exercise in futility.

There were two cars used by project participants, and I, the only birder in the group, drove the first car. You can park by the side and check the Boljetinska River Canyon at your right, a true geological history book. Other species include Grey Wagtail and Marsh Tit. One of the problems was poor communication.

It is on its way to breeding grounds mainly in Japan and thus only briefly stays here. In contrast, the Amur Paradise Flycatcher regularly breeds in China, even in Shanghai. It gets a bit easier once we leave the unholy group of leaf warblers. to another species. The female is less impressive but still a nice bird to see.

There was a Gartered Trogon right above me, and one cooperative Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth on a cecropia tree, raising its head to smile at us. A group (maybe 4-5 ex.) At the Pacuare river bank there was a group of rafters getting ready to tackle the noisy waves. Next goal: 1100 species, to cover about 10% of the total.

Since most of the rain happened the evening of the 8th and the following morning, many sites had good weather on the morning of October Global Big Day and because of that, local birders still managed to identify well over 700 species in Costa Rica (!). and ended later that eveing with a final total of 154 species.

This beauty of shorebirds is the Hudsonian Godwit , a master of extra long flights and refined species preferring scattered boggy places for nesting way up north and estuarine wintering habitats way down south. In between way north and way south, the majority of Hudwits either fly right on over, or stop at regular rest and refueling sites.

Just last year, 5 new bird species and 5 new subspecies were discovered in a few short weeks of fieldwork on the islands of Taliabu, Peleng and Batudaka. In the morning, still sleepy, we enter the jungle, where a sounder of Indian Boars (a long-maned subspecies Sus scrofa cristatus ) is watching us, standing among the first trees, right next to the road.
