Magpie Geese breed near Broome once again

This year we have had high numbers of Magpie Geese once again in the Broome area and this last weekend we observed our first family groups for the season. The Magpie Geese families are on the move and the family groups that we saw last weekend all consisted of three adults and ten or more goslings.

As the tide falls: an hour at Brancaster Staithe

Though these plovers are common on the North Norfolk coast, their nearest breeding grounds are far to the north. A few do breed in Europe, on the extreme north-east of European Russia. The latter is half the size of the Grey, but with its stout beak and prominent eyes shows a distinct family likeness. A Ringed Plover.

The proximity to the Myanmar border is reflected in the presence of Burmese Shrikes here – on the wrong side of the border, but it is well known that this species has never been particularly good at geography. This photo explains the scientific species name haemacephalus (bloodheaded).
