I got to see a beautiful female and owlet on a trip to a secret nest location near Howard Prairie Lake (human-made nest structures have enhanced local breeding for these huge owls whose nest success is boosted to 83% on artificial platforms vs. 66% at natural sites).

The name “Harpy Eagle” was coined by South American explorers, and is based on the harpies of Greek Mythology. A Harpy Eagle. At 3-4 inches long , they rival those of the great Grizzly Bear, and allow the Harpy Eagles to go after prey unavailable to many other birds. Like Woods, I can’t get over their talons.

A good way up one of the tallest pines is an Eagle’s nest. Every year there manage to be two eagles up there in that nest. Ducks are easier prey for the Eagle.
