Horned Larks breed widely over North America, including up here in the High Arctic. Here they are a common breeding bird, one of our two species that migrate from here to Europe and then south. Breeding plumaged Lapland Longspurs, Red-throated and Pacific Loons ? Not only were there no Ravens to film (I was up at the airport watching a family of Ravens peeling tape off boxes of cargo left outside to load onto the south bound flight) but he found a pair of White-crowned Sparrows. As far as I can tell it is the most northern breeding record for the species. A quick peek revealed a rapidly growing family of six nestlings. As we drive along we invariably have an adult Baird’s swirling around the truck, trying to lead it away from its family. Who doesn’t like photos of baby birds?

Kills in Canada, Alaska and Mexico are not included in the count. Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1.

They breed up here, and spend their winters (usually) in the lower reaches of the Arctic and near polynyas (year round ice free waters) such as the North Water Polynya between Ellesmere Island and Groenland. They are able to breed at the age of 5-6 weeks so it is easy to see, given the right conditions how quickly their population can grow.

I’ve never known quite what to do with the two Cardinal sightings I have had near our church in Morelia, since that species is not supposed to be seen there, or to be migratory, but both sightings occurred in winter. The Great Egret was in breeding plumage and courtship posture–bright lime green lores, head bending down and then snapping up, long, impossibly delicate plumes waving over its body as if possessed by independent spirits.
