Though I have made several trips to southern California over the eight years I have been birding almost every trip has been in December or January. Though, to be honest, I haven’t really birded all that much as this is a family vacation.). Southern California in summer is where it is at. How could I not crush it?

A Family Outing at Point Lookout

Late Saturday morning our little family had to decide what it was we were going to do. We hadn’t been to an ocean as a family since we were in California back in December so we decided to head out to Nassau County’s Point Lookout, which is nicely situated on the west side of Jones Inlet. Purple Sandpiper.

Guamúchil Mania

The most common one, Manila tamarind, is wildly inaccurate, since the tree is native to southwestern Mexico, not Manila, and its only connection to tamarind trees is that both are in different subfamilies of the huge legume family. I first met the tree in Baja California, where it is known as guamúchil (gwa-MOOCH-eel), so I will call it that.

Tundra Swans In The California Central Valley

The North American Tundra Swan ( Cygnus columbianus columbianus ) migrates in flocks of family groups… leaving their Arctic breeding grounds in late September and arriving in their wintering grounds in November and December 1 (click on photos for full sized images).

Pygmy Nuthatches at Lassen Volcanic National Park

These Pygmy Nuthatches were seen in June nesting in a pine tree at Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California. They are one of the few cooperatively breeding passerines in North America and a third of the breeding pairs have 1–3 male helpers, usually progeny or other relatives. What a nice, close knit family!
