Yellow-headed Blackbirds: Conspicuous Wetland Breeders

10,000 Birds

I had returned to the location we had seen this rather large breeding flock to photograph some Sandhill Cranes that were also nesting in this large wetland that makes up part of the headwaters of the middle fork of the Feather River. You see, the males arrive in the breeding grounds before the females and establish a territory that they defend aggressively against other males.

In Search of New York’s Breeding Birds

10,000 Birds

As always, the woods around the marsh were busy with breeders setting up shop. I said good-bye to Wurtsboro and headed east and then north, making my way to the Town of Wallkill in Ulster County, in particular, to Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge where I hoped to see Grasshopper Sparrows and other grassland breeders. I was home by noon after what was undoubtedly my most successful search for some of New York’s coolest breeding birds ever!

Quebec to Review Puppy Mill Laws

Critter News

Animal welfare workers are calling for stricter laws on breeding facilities after more than 500 allegedly malnourished dogs were seized from a Quebec puppy farm last week. breeders canada animal cruelty quebec puppy mills dogsThe fallout from the huge puppy mill seizure is fueling calls for a review of Quebec's animal rights laws, which are abysmal even for Canada. Getting a Kitten from Kansas

Critter News

I am no fan of breeders, I'll admit it. I think there are many disreputable breeders, I think they are increasing a bloated supply of pets, and I think there are many purebreds already available from shelters. Are there good breeders out there that care for their animals and run their business out of pure love of their work and the animals? I also know there are people who want to buy from a breeder and no one else. The best mousers are not of any particular breed.

A Strategic Arms Race Among Birds

10,000 Birds

The vast majority of the 10,000+ living species of birds are passerines, and the vast majority of those have a similar system of breeding: Mom and dad bird make a nest and share parental responsibilities roughly equally, if not identically. A recent paper in Science, Brood Parasitism and the Evolution of Cooperative Breeding in Birds by Feeney, Medina, Somveille, et al, looks into this interesting possible relationship.

Computer-modelled Range Maps

10,000 Birds

There are 240+ breeding birds in Serbia, but the colonial breeders and raptors were treated separately, and for a few dozen uncommon species there wasn’t enough data for computer modeling software. In the end, to give a due credit, those range maps were modeled by Dimitrije Radisic and the team of BirdLife Serbia within the European Breeding Birds Atlas 2 (EBBA2) project. Humane Society Exposes Petland Practices

Critter News

It has about 140 stores nationwide that sell puppies that supposedly come from "good" breeders (are any breeders good? Many of Petland's puppies are not supplied directly by breeders but are purchased from a "middle man"—large-scale "pet distributors," otherwise known as brokers—showing that the company may not even know who the breeders are or what their standards of care may be like. Some of the breeders were found with sick or dead dogs in their cages.

Where Are You Birding This Third Weekend of July 2020?

10,000 Birds

This is not to say that you won’t find great birds where you are, but only that they will likely be the resident breeders or wintering species you’ve already grown accustomed to. Welcome to the doldrums.

On Bestiality

Animal Person

People who are breeders use racks to allow a male animal mounting the female without damage. This occurs in all animal breeders: bovine, horses, dogs, cats, pigs, and other animals. Breeders force a female to have sex with a male even if the female doesn't want to have sex. There is no wrong in using a breeding rack, it does not damage an animal.

On Bad Presidential Puppy Decisions

Animal Person

But I didn't campaign for a presidential greyhound for exactly the same reason Obama's decision was disappointing: it glorifies pure breed dogs. It's disheartening to know that after being educated about the "pet" trade and the implications of buying from a breeder, and seeming to understand the problems and issues, we nevertheless will have yet another pure breed dog in the White House.

The Importance of Citizen Science in Mexico

Howell’s A Guide to the Birds of Mexico and Northern Central America , which is absolutely my birder’s Bible for the region, says that Snowy Plovers are fair to uncommon summer breeders in the Lake Cuitzeo area, which they certainly are (breeders, though not uncommon).

Great Question About Obama Pup

Animal Person

Here's a great question I received via direct message on Twitter ( www.twitter.com/mary_martin ): "Do you think that even if Obama had adopted a shelter dog-it still may have caused a run on breeders? Perhaps if there were a heartfelt message followed by action that supported it, no matter what breed were rescued, adoptions would increase.

In " Prominent Horseman Faces Questions About Neglect ," Joe Drape of the New York Times reports: Four undernourished and neglected former racehorses belonging to Ernie Paragallo, a prominent New York thoroughbred breeder and owner, were rescued from a New York kill pen last month, one step from being slaughtered. Stephanie wrote about horses dying across the pond yesterday.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Fourth of May 2020)

Black-faced Spoonbill

10,000 Birds

Habitat destruction, disease and hunting are still major problems that affect the conservation efforts, but the breeding sites and wintering grounds now have international protection. Captive breeding programs have not shown much success. They develop the black face, dark bill, yellow breast and shaggy crest as they reach breeding age after three or four years. Many of these potential breeders though will not nest.

Add another voice to the growing choir of those speaking out against puppy mills!

What To Do If You Find a Pit Bull

4 The Love Of Animals

As a breed, pit bulls have a bad rap. However, they are more vulnerable to being forced into fighting than other breeds. Aside from the breed’s abuses, one finds that adopting out this breed is highly difficult. Yes, this breed is poorly represented in the media. However, any breed of dog that has been abused, neglected, or homeless may be aggressive to humans or other dogs. Like every dog they are vulnerable to homelessness and mistreatment.

She is the latest of our local breeders, not nesting usually until mid-May. She will begin breeding in April. The female is the earliest breeder of all these species, arriving on breeding grounds shortly after the males in November. The least common species of hummingbird I see here is the Calliope Hummingbird ( Stellula calliope ).

The only unstreaked pipit around here and a characteristic breeder of sand dunes is the Tawny Pipit and this one shows well, holding to the grass edge. They do not build nests, but occupy old nests of Rooks and breed colonially among them. Red-footed Falcon’s breeding range starts less than 50 mi north of here and I hope that some will choose to join a local rookery and stay. They are quite a rare breeding species in Serbia, declining as we speak, but one pair breeds nearby.

It also is home to the breeding sites of vulnerable seabirds including the Cook’s Petrel and Black Petrel, both species are considered vulnerable. Black Petrels ( Procellaria parkinsoni ) only breed on two islands, of which Little Barrier is one. Cook’s Petrel ( Pterodroma cookii ) is another range-restricted breeder that nests on Little Barrier Island. So it was a considerable achievement to find them breeding on one of the largest islands.

The Warbler Duo of Florida’s Mangroves

Although both species are widespread in North America as breeders in shrubby edge habitats, that is not the case in the southern half of the sunshine state (the more northerly race of Prairie Warbler is an uncommon breeder in the panhandle). Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of June 2012?

Hermit Thrush Brewery: Po Tweet

10,000 Birds

Spring migration flies by – literally – rather quickly in the northeast but the closeness of the Adirondacks means that although all those boreal-breeding warblers, kinglets, thrushes, and sparrows disappear from my local patch by late May, many of them haven’t gone very far. I consider myself fortunate that I learned to love summer birding before I ever knew what the summer doldrums are, if only because summer was the very first season I began birding.

Buller’s Albatrosses

10,000 Birds

The Buller’s Mollymawk is an endemic breeder to New Zealand, although it ranges widely away from the islands to feed, and regularly goes to South America’s Humboldt Current to feed. Wild Westies

Westland Petrels are endemic breeders to New Zealand, and an attractive large black seabird. The species is somewhat unusual in that it is one of the few procellariids that still breeds on the mainland of New Zealand. The Fate of the Florida Anis

10,000 Birds

Formerly a common resident in the southern peninsula of Florida, these meerkats of the bird world have declined sharply in the ABA area to the point that they have almost certainly been extirpated as breeders with only occasional wanderers from the Caribbean showing up at coastal locations in southeast Florida — it is about as difficult to see a La Sagra’s Flycatcher or Western Spindalis in the ABA area as a Smooth-billed Ani now.

Acorn Woodpeckers: The Clowns of the Avian World

10,000 Birds

Most Acorn Woodpeckers are cooperative breeders and live in family groups of up to a dozen or more individuals. Within a group, 1–7 male co-breeders compete for matings with 1–3 joint-nesting females who lay their eggs in the same nest cavity. Groups may also contain up to 10 male and female non-breeding helpers, usually offspring of the group produced in prior years 1. Why would I call these beautiful woodpeckers the “clowns of the avian world?”

Osprey Love in Northern California

Most of the Osprey breeding in North America are migratory, only Florida, the Caribbean and Baja California host non-migratory breeders 1. Living in Northern California offers nature lovers many opportunities to view wildlife in there native habitat.

Fancy Pigeon Blues

10,000 Birds

The breeding of pigeons into ever more extravagant shapes helped put Darwin onto the scent of evolution, and has provided a calm and innocent (ok, sometimes not so innocent) hobby for generations of city-dwellers deprived of the comforts of a bucolic lifestyle. I haven’t measured this particular specimen myself, but some breeders of short-beaked pigeons are known to take things to extremes that prevent the birds from feeding their own young.

Yellow-throated Warbler at Connetquot River State Park

10,000 Birds

Yellow-throated Warblers are a rarity in New York State and as I mentioned earlier this year they are usually considered an “overshoot,” that is, a bird that usually breeds further south that occasionally flies past its breeding grounds during migration before realizing what it has done and turning around to go back to where it belongs.

Spring Has Sprung – Where Are the Migrants?

10,000 Birds

Sure, the expected wood-warblers that overshoot their breeding range are showing up and even the occasional rarity has appeared, but this spring has largely been dreadful for we northeasterners. Animal Ethics

Given the current dire shortage of homes, no breeding is responsible. Every time someone buys a puppy or kitten from a breeder, a shelter animal loses its chance at a home and pays with its life. Breeders kill shelter animals’ chances to find good homes.

Won’t Someone Think Of The Children?

Common Moorhens are, like most birds, monogamous breeders, and may bond for a number of years in the same territory. They may breed as a group, but monogamy is the general rule. Not so the Dusky Moorhen, which is a pervert of the first order, and mostly (according to the HBW) breeds in groups, with all males mating with all females(!). The grasslands have been popping off with breeders for well over a month, but the snow is just now giving way to lush alpine meadows and rocky tundras. Their range of breeding is literally only very southern Wyoming to very northern New Mexico.

Animal Ethics

To the Editor: Re “ States Try to Weigh Safety With Dog Owners’ Rights ” (news article, July 23): Any law that deems a dog as dangerous or vicious based on appearance, breed or phenotype is unfair and discriminatory. Designating certain breeds as inherently dangerous implies to the public that behavior is not effectively influenced (positively or negatively), by training, and also encourages the faulty perception of other breeds as being inherently safe.
