A Eurasian Blackbird is checking for the remaining maize seeds. A Common Chaffinch is singing, while one male Blackbird chases the other from his precious maize seeds. I expected the sensation of discomfort to come only later, after hours of sitting, but it started soon and I was changing my sitting posture every few minutes.

As an adult Bald Eagle and a first of the season flock of Tree Swallows flew overhead, several birds were cleaning up underneath the feeders. Most of the birds feeding at the various feeders would occasionally take time to drink or bathe at the water feature. Here is a male Lesser Goldfinch taking his turn. All in all, I tallied 44 species.

Back on the first weekend in May, I attended the Heron Festival at Clear Lake, one of the four aforementioned lakes which also include Eagle Lake, Lake Almanor and the Thermalito Afterbay of Lake Oroville. The boat trip also offered some good looks at the Yellow-headed Blackbirds nesting along the shores.

Brewer’s Blackbirds and House Finches were carting nesting material to and fro. The spectacular views of the valley also offered me looks at a passing Common Raven , Red-tailed Hawk , and an adult Bald Eagle. A few Northern Flickers were loud above the din, as were the omnipresent American Crows.
