While driving along the Trekvaart canal I spotted hundreds of Tufted Duck with a nice sprinkling of Smew , Common Pochard and Common Goldeneye. There were also Tundra Bean Goose , a variety of ducks, a pair of Slavonian Grebe , Mute Swan and passerines like Eurasian Siskin , Fieldfare and European Goldfinch. So it was this day.

Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many. Red-breasted Meadowlarks controlled the drier sections while Yellow-hooded Blackbirds occupied the more flooded areas. We had no idea if the nighthawks would hunker down or flee.

We fell asleep to the laugh-like sounds of Common Gallinules making their presence known on a nearby pond, as well as the tell-tale whistling of the aptly named Whistling Ducks. The majority of the avian calls had disappeared, replaced with the near-constant braying of Red-winged Blackbirds and buzzing of Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers.

Most of them were pretty good in the Owl-Duck-Pigeon range, but they got bogged down when trying to make the leap from a study skin to a particular page of the field guide for, say, a blackbird or a sparrow.
