We were able to find a very nice RV park, just a couple of miles from one of my all time favourite birding hotspots, Billy Frank Jr, Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. Out near the tidal flats that make up a good portion of this refuge, there were plenty of Red-winged Blackbirds.

So if you come to Spring Wings, and you’d be well served if you do, get ready to see lots and lots of shorebirds and ducks and waders. Yellow-headed Blackbirds singing in the reeds allowed us to get an arm’s length away. Yellow-headed Blackbird was another lifer for me, and omnipresent.

These ponds and the larger Cedar Lake and collection pond hold Tufted Duck , Greylag Goose and Eurasian Moorhen. Leeds Castle’s most showy “blackbird” is the Jackdaw , Corvus monedula.

The nature reserve is really well managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust with numerous hides and wheelchair access to much of the reserve. It was a destination I had never experienced so I made a few phone calls and got some information from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife agent who actually runs both the Butte Valley and the Shasta Valley Wildlife Areas, which are about 25 miles apart.

And when two of those eyes are professionally trained for wildlife monitoring, that is certainly a big plus. For example, of the 9 duck species we saw, 7 are winter-only. For example, these may all technically be Blackbirds, but there are Red-winged and Yellow-headed Blackbirds and a Brown-headed Cowbird in this one photo.

The first stop, Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge in central Oregon is without a doubt one of the most important stop overs for migrating birds on the west coats, no matter the species. The well manicured area near the entrance was watered with a sprinkler system, and the mown area was quite popular with the Brewer’s Blackbirds.
