Every year, Ducks Unlimited of Mexico, A.C. The various national versions of Ducks Unlimited are mostly an outgrowth of sports hunting. Now, I secretly do suspect that many millions of ducks may spend the winter in my own backyard. and Canada, but also in Latin American wintering grounds. But I did both.

Duck Migration

Then, at 6 PM, as the sun disappeared completely over the horizon, the ducks on the pond started massing on the west end of the pond, with many small flocks from all over the pond flying in to the west end until it was basically covered with ducks. A winter miscellany

There’s Lynford Water, a scenic tree-fringed former gravel working that today is popular with Great Crested Grebes, Tufted Ducks and wild swimmers (yes, they even swim in December). Part of the attraction is the variety of habitats within a small area. Lynford also boasts an arboretum, with 200 different species of trees.

A return visit to Summer Lake Refuge

With a very diverse, and extremely large wildlife population, Summer Lake has become an extremely popular destination, not only for waterfowl hunters, but birdwatchers, fishermen, and photographers. Much of this public refuge is accessible via well maintained dirt roads, and provides several camping areas, as well as many day use areas.

Patch: An Urban Red-tailed Hawk (3 of 4)

(Check out Part 1 here) (Check out Part 2 here) This hawk was a fierce hunter. She ate everything from Rock Pigeons to caterpillars, earthworms to Brewer’s Blackbirds, but her staple diet consisted of plump, toothy, charismatic, and abundant Pocket Gophers. Patch was focused and deliberate, consistent and inventive.

Of Whiskey Jacks and Water Ouzels

Peregrine Falcon is certainly more elegant than Duck Hawk. And the use of Long-tailed Duck for a waterfowl whose traditional name I decline to type is a small, but real, improvement in the state of civilization as a whole. But it sounds so much more sophisticated to say Ouzel.

Mega Rarity Tour of New Zealand – Extinction Special

Lacking, as I do, a birding reputation that would make people part with cash for my time I’ll have to go for the rarity hunters and put together an itinerary of highlights that can’t be missed. Also on the ground you’ll see your first Finsch’s Duck. I can’t lose. It certainly has no known relatives.
