This place, called Los Filtros Viejos (the Old Filters) because it used to be Morelia’s main water source, is actually a great place for birding. And there is nothing I can see there that I can’t also see, alongside rarer birds, elsewhere. I love the closeup this bird gifted me.

Vulture hunts down and ravages Sea Turtles

Meet Tim; he’s a baby Olive Ridley Turtle. On this one morning when I first met Tim, I counted 110 Olive Ridley Turtle nests exploding out and scuttling for the “saftey” of the ocean. Oh, look at all those parallel lines running down the beach, those are all baby turtle tracks as far as the eye can see!

Time for the Flatback Turtle

The birds have moved the nest site slightly each year depending on human interaction, but it is still confined to one small section of grey rocky outcrops with a great view for sitting for 28 days. There have been successes some years at this location, but sadly this year the birds lost both of their attempts at breeding to predation.
