Danny let us know about a bird he had earlier that he was convinced was a Connecticut Warbler , something I teased him about because he has never seen one and it was fun to tell him that he actually had a Nashville Warbler , of which there were at least two in the park.

Hidden away on the west side of Central Park, easily accessed from the 81st Street entrance by the American Museum of Natural History, and adjacent to the Diana Ross playground is a marvelous bird magnet. Nashville Warbler Vermivora ruficapilla. Anywhere you can see a Bay-breasted Warbler below eye level is a great birding location!

It is deeper than the saucer shown above, so I have placed a handmade, curved roof tile in the middle for birds that prefer shallower water. It is also a good description of the birding in southernmost Florida. However, few realize how unique and how good the birding can be here. A cool climate on one side and wide expanses of water on the others creates isolation as many temperate land bird species seem unable to colonize areas south of Lake Okeechobee.

The waterhole, an unassuming little vernal pool, is often the only water in the eastern half of Forest Park which means that any bird that wants a bath or a drink has to visit. And on this past Saturday were the birds ever coming! Add those twenty to the species I saw before work and I totaled 23 species of wood-warbler for the day!

McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park offers close viewing of these birds as well as interpretive signs throughout the park. Over 130 bird species have been observed on the five miles of hiking trails that wind through evergreen and hardwood forests. The Pacific Crest Trail also passes through the park.

Who remembers birding parties? With some of the beats locked down still, or again, the birding has been patchy. However, 10 beats from 7 countries were able to submit some 127 checklists containing 597 birds from 7 countries (USA, UK, Serbia, China, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago and Costa Rica).
