It is an excellent site in the winter months in particular, when seabirds including ducks, divers and grebes are quite reliable here. I was therefore eager to visit this popular birding site again, and being able to combine it with my trip to Texel (which I covered here in my last post ) made it all the more convenient.

Who cares for your ducks in the winter?

That is because Lago de Cuitzeo receives a huge number of migratory waterfowl and shorebirds, with smaller numbers of sparrows, buntings, and other migratory birds in the areas around the lake’s shore. Not only are the species numbers good, but the spectacle of so, so many individual birds can be thrilling.

The Whistling Ducks of Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge

Sales of duck stamps have funded the preservation of wetlands and other wildlife habitat, which in turn has supported an increase in waterfowl populations.
