My previous post on birding here has received some criticism – apparently I was too harsh on the place. True to my own recipe I would arrive a day or two early to go birding. I’d go with Mexican birding buddy Mau, guided by Kingfisher Birding who also provided the bird pictures. The birds warmed us too.

Borrow pit birding near Broome

It is often a lot hotter there than closer to the coast and many bird species roost in the area or come in for a drink and bathe during the day. Borrow pit birds. Last Sunday there were plenty of bird species to see and it was easy enough to stand in the shade and watch the birds come in for a drink.

Cockatoo Creek

We have observed huge flocks of Galahs there on previous visits and other times there are more bird species, but only one or two of each species. Last Sunday we stopped as usual and we were able to observe a good selection of birds from the bridge. As soon as you get out of your vehicle you can hear birds at this location.

It doesn’t take much water to attract birds

At the shallow natural clay-pan where the three Pink-eared Ducks were hiding in plain sight there were many other bird species. At least a dozen birds came in and waited in nearby trees and then moved down to the water’s edge. The most constant birds were the White-plumed Honeyeaters , which came and went for hours on end.

Roebuck Plains in flood

It didn’t take too long after the big rain event at the end of January for Roebuck Plains to flood and the birds to arrive. The highway out of Broome towards Derby has also become great for bird-watching. Sadly, one of the first birds that we saw was a recently deceased Barn Owl. Wandering Whistling-Ducks under the fence.

White-winged Black Terns and Whiskered Terns near Broome

The cattle moved away from the flooded areas and the area beside the highway is home to many species of birds. This barbed wire fence is the only place that the birds really have that they can roost when the land is so flooded. The Terns take advantage of the barbed wire fence along the edge of Roebuck Plains as a roost.

It is undoubtedly the most wonderful time of year – when we don our binoculars and boots and head off on a tradition spanning more than a hundred years – that of the Christmas Bird Count! We soon departed to our various locations, bellies full and eyes hungry for birds. Three of them in fact, rare visitors from the north.
