A World Turned Upside Down

10,000 Birds

So when there is no Lake Cuitzeo on which to winter, where do all these birds go? As soon as we had parked beside the lake, we saw a wide variety of migratory ducks: Canvasbacks, Gadwalls, Blue-winged Teals, American Wigeons , and even a pair of Redheads. Not bad, for a reservoir that normally does not host any wild ducks.

Hawking for Nighthawks

10,000 Birds

Just under a fortnight ago, I saw a report on the local bird alert of a sighting of a group of approximately 20 Nacunda Nighthawks at a wetland not more than 20 minutes from where I live. It seemed to be good birding judgement to scan the seasonally flooded wetland in the couple hours of daylight available before the storm arrived.

Racking up the numbers

10,000 Birds

So on January 1st, or as close to it as I can get, I always head a half hour north to the one site of mine that offers more species than any other: Lago de Cuitzeo (Cuitzeo Lake). This lake is always good for some 50-60 species, even during the three months or so of summer when no migratory species can be expected.
