The lighthouse at the point itself has been a nest-site to a pair of Eastern Ospreys for many years and they fish in the waters around the point. The most common morph of the Eastern Reef Egret around Broome is the grey morph rather than the white morph and there are several birds present in the rock pools once the tide drops.

It migrates north to breed in the tundra where it nests on the ground close to shallow pools. It is easy to see its close association with other fish-catching, ‘toothed’ ducks. The actual touchdown is slightly less elegant with a bounce after the first contact and the bird is thrown forward into quite an ungainly landing.

The zoo blamed human error for the deaths, saying it didn’t have the expertise to manage the fish and that a lack of dissolved oxygen led to the deaths.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family.
