Not sure that I impressed them, I chose to bluff them and looked left and right for a suitable tree branch to pick. At some stage, a salmon-hunting bear at a shingle beach came too close, mere 9 steps. Attempting to bluff the bear in believing that they were even bigger bears, Hoshino suggested raising their hands, to appear taller.

Gray Thrashers are not as conspicuous as the hummingbirds, but should not be difficult to find in the right places. They do bear some resemblance to Sage Thrashers , but have a much heavier, more sickle-shaped bill. Look for them wherever there are flowers in bloom; we saw many in Todos Santos and its outskirts.

For both the Classic and Finch feeders, all you need to do to fill them is twist off the top and pour seed (that’s the Finch feeder with the top off in the photo on the right). My Red-bellied Woodpecker takes over the Classic feeder daily during the winter several times a day, except for the day a Chipping Sparrow just refused to leave.

Informed literature bears out my experience that most birds are seen singly or in pairs. Wicked, right? The former British colony’s Z.c. melli strain is one of as many as 12 races and shows a lighter face than many of the others. To describe the back as grey makes it sound very drab, but in good light it takes on a bluish hue.

The crowd of macaws is soon joined by parrots arriving as if on cue and bearing their colorfully named body parts: Yellow-crowned , Blue-headed , White-bellied , Orange-cheeked , and Mealy – followed by two species of parakeets – Dusky-headed and White-eyed.
