In a brief tour of a particular biotech research company, I was taken to the animal lab. but did experiment on mice and guinea pigs. Interesting that many of the grants this place gets specifically say they can't experiment on any domesticated animals (cats and dogs I guess.). It was a jarring moment. Weird, weird, weird.

I found my Guinea pig unresponsive this morning. I took him indoors to show to my dog and cat which had bonded with him. He was freezing cold, his limbs were stiff but not his body. His eyes were milky. He has no partner, he was somehow happier after his brother passed away.

When I agreed to read and review Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson's THE DOG WHO COULDN'T STOP LOVING (Harper 2010), the regal Charles Hobson Booger, III was still with us. He was adopted by the Masson family and was apparently the most loving dog all who met him had ever had the pleasure of being licked by. And the crying would never stop.

When we left off , the New York Times' Roger Cohen had eaten dog while in China, and wasn't thrilled about it emotionally. Logically, he admits it does make perfect sense to eat dogs if you eat pigs and cows. Dogs are safe. According to theASPCA dogs have little chance of contracting swine flu. Potbelly and pygmy pigs are susceptible. Pet pigs may contract swine flu. All companion animals including dogs, cats, hamsters, mice, rats, chinchillas, guinea pigs, birds, snakes, and lizards would be considered as pets. If it passes, San Francisco residents would have to go to a shelter or rescue group to adopt an animal. Pet sales would be banned altogether, except for the sale of pet fish.

The law, since revised, aimed to protect animal research laboratories from illegal, sometimes violent protests. It was a 2-1 decision by the US Court of Appeals.

For you and me, there are about 200 bird species, but for proper tourists, there seem to be only five species in the reserve: Bengal Tiger , Leopard , Sloth Bear , Indian Wild Dog (Dhole) and the Gaur. Next to them are White-breasted and Common Kingfishers , while Cattle Egrets are spread among both deer and pigs.

There are wild dogs present and these are not the dingo, but a dog that was also brought to Australia by Europeans in 1788 and has spread throughout the country. The main threat was the reduction in vegetation for native animals and the general degradation of the land.

From the feral cats of Project Treadstone to Charles' back surgery to problems with Violet's Vetsulin (insulin for dogs), we had more than our share of issues. Dogs have died from hypoglycemia due to Vetsulin and there is a class action lawsuit. Like many people with diabetic dogs, I haven't had major problems with Vetsulin.

I immensely enjoyed "EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED" (even on the big screen) and eagerly anticipated "EATING ANIMALS" by Jonathan Safran Foer. Finally, if you know someone who gravitates toward the philosophical issues around our use of animals, this is a good book. Ever, in fact. Not great, but good. Imagine being served a plate of sushi.
