In the forests of South America, a birder is likely to cross the path of a feeding flock of brown birds represented by Woodcreepers, Spinetails, Foliage-gleaners and Xenops. I am lucky enough to visit the Atlantic Forests of south-eastern Brazil from time to time and an encounter with one of these flocks always leaves me twisted.

It actually makes a lot of sense, the geographic features of the isthmus between North America (including Mexico, because Mexico is part of North America) and South America cut across political lines, as do birds. This is a bird that flew over 3,400 miles in one flight from Brazil to South Carolina, an amazing bird that is representative of every other Whimbrel. This practice is a throwback to more than a century ago when gunners hunted shorebirds throughout the Americas. Machi was, of course, only one bird.

This species has also established a presence in South America (Brazil) and Iberia. Maybe the sadness is because the IUCN declared this myna as one of the only three birds among the world’s 100 worst invasive species. You will not be surprised to hear that the Common Waxbill is also introduced – from West Africa this time.

Of all migratory birds breeding in North America, Swallow-tailed Kites are among the first to leave for the wintering grounds. Once on the east side of the Andes, they will continue south to southern Brazil arriving in the Pantanal area where they mingle with the resident population of Swallow-tailed Kites there.

While the native apple snail continued declining, another species of apple snail native to South America began to appear in canals and ponds in South Florida. It would take years to restore such large scale landscape changes, perhaps not soon enough to reverse the kite’s population downward trend.

Trinidad is the northern limit of the range of the Red-breasted Blackbird , though it is unclear if the occasional birds that show up in Tobago are wanderers from Trinidad or northern South America or are breeding there. You can also find Red-breasted Blackbirds in Costa Rica and Panama and south to Peru and Brazil.

Crowned Lapwing For such a huge area of land with great expanses of pasture, prairie and field, I find it odd that the Americas only host 2 species of Lapwing. I ran across a couple of Southern Lapwings in Ibirapuera Park in Sao Paulo, Brazil recently and watched as they indulged in typical Vanellus behaviour.

I mention all of this because we in North America, especially the southern part of North America, have storks too. Fossils discovered in Brazil are indistinguishable from modern Wood Storks, and date from at least the late Pleistocene. But ours have none of the cultural cache that European White Storks enjoy in their home range.

Rufous Hornero , Furnarius rufus is an ovenbird from South America. The first two pictures were taken in Sao Paulo, Brazil , and match the geographic distribution of F.r. It is one of the most common birds seen in the parks and even on the pavements of the cities. Inelegantly, it could be described as an exaggerated chicken impression.

The difference in the name is subtle and the nominate, Chroicocephalus cirrocephalus cirrocephalus is from South America, so the locally favoured title, Gray-hooded Gull, would be more acceptable to North American birding aficionados, but I maintain that a hood would continue down the nape to the top of the back, which it clearly does not.
