So both birds are assumed by many to be escapees from a zoo or a private collection somewhere. I should also mention that the male American Flamingo and female Chilean Flamingo were briefly joined by an equally improbable male Chilean Flamingo in the fall of 2020 and the spring of 2021, but the male has not appeared since then.

Our 2020 drought taught me that any body of water, no matter how small, might host these “drought refugees” in dry years. There were plenty of other birds in the area, with 72 species around the reservoir for the day. It was odd to see a high-quality species like a Least Bittern next to an entirely domestic duck.

Similar to 2020, more than 32,000 people participated, 78,000 checklists were submitted, and more than 7,200 bird species were identified. This is an excellent total of bird species identified in Costa Rica for one calendar day. Great Potoo was one of those many bird species.
