In 2016, the Shanghai Wildlife Protection Management Station started the search for one, though progress has been slow. The Light-vented Bulbul is one of the three or four most common bird species in Shanghai. It is one of the 19 species of parrotbills. I would like to introduce two candidates, a bulbul and a parrotbill.

The majority are clearly Mallards , followed by Garganeys , with one and possibly more Green-winged Teals , also Ferruginous Ducks … Surprises among them are one Common Shelduck , a species that most likely breeds some 15 mi from here (and my first shelduck of the year) and an even greater surprise: two Eurasian Wigeons.

Lovely Cotinga is the flagship species at Pico Bonito, where it is perhaps easier to see than anywhere else within its range. More than 400 species have been recorded at the lodge to date. Thankfully due to the long life span of this bird species the population appears to be somewhat stable at the moment. The last successful breeding year was in 2016 when the eggs were laid a little earlier than the usual July 1st and one chick did survive to join other Pied Oystercatchers in a non-breeding flock for a few years.

FWS evidently objected to this proposal, noting the proximity to the refuge and the area’s importance as a migratory corridor for many species of birds.
