That magnificent predator was too distant for decent photos, so I snapped some of the Long-tailed Ducks on which the owl has been sustaining itself… As for Corey, his Space Coast experience is yielding ABA birds and lifers in buckets.

Pillar Point provided an easily accessible location to see a variety of shorebirds, scoters, loons, grebes, cormorants, ducks, and gulls, among others. According to eBird, there have been approximately 270 species seen at the hotspot that includes the harbor. The evening of September 7, 2012 was a truly memorable birding experience.

The gender of this duck drove my decision, since I swore I would not be moved to chase a drab eider hen, even if it would be a life bird. But on his boat ride around lower New York Harbor and Jamaica Bay on Sunday he found himself appreciating the Herring Gulls more than any other species. Is he becoming a larophile?

I had a great time back in 2012 and even more fun in 2014. Florida is a great place to bird in January because in addition to the year-round species there are a host of birds that winter in the relatively balmy climate that Florida has in winter. Ditto for the feral Muscovy Ducks , though they are a bit less nice.

In the case of Midway, a National Wildlife Refuge , the offending species is Golden Crownbeard ( Verbesina enceliolides ) , an innocuous-looking flower that’s native to Mexico and the Southwestern United States. They include Black-footed Albatrosses , Laysan Ducks , and roughly 65 percent of the world’s Laysan Albatrosses.

I wrote of some birding areas around Derby in August 2012 and we hoped that we would be able to get to some of those this last week. The Plumed Whistling-Ducks were the duck species most heavily represented, but Grey Teal, Pacific Black Ducks and Wandering Whistling-Ducks were also present.

The Little Egret walks in front of her, a dozen Lesser Whistling Ducks flies noisily low above water and through a flooded grass wades one Black-winged Stilt. In 2012, the Hindustani Times claimed that from January 2011 to June 2012, a further 9 tigers were killed in the Tadoba buffer zone.

Finishing a year with 372 species is nothing to sneeze at and the fact that I added twenty-five birds to my ABA list was nice. I begin 2012 with 284 birds on my Queens Life List , 478 birds on my ABA Life List , and 1,048 birds on my World Life List. Tufted Duck in Cold Spring Harbor. Such is a year without foreign travel.

This leads me to my third twitch for the celebrated Falcated Duck ( Anas falcata ) at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in January of 2012. I make this statement with this addendum; I would not post the location of a species that could be targeted during hunting season. This was a no-brainer.

On 11 November 2012 I was leaving Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake after a fruitless morning of trying to photograph birds in a snowstorm and poor light when a female Prairie Falcon ambushed this Northern Shoveler on the water not far from the causeway on which I was driving. Here she is making one of her very low passes over the duck.

Felonious Jive really likes a ravishing returning rarity – a Falcated Duck. This bird represented only the second documented record of this species in Florida.
