My Year in Birding 2012

I had some goals for this year as well, goals which I laid out in the introduction to my 2012 year list. I came up just short of reaching 1,100 Birds on my overall World Life List , clocking in at 1,096, not a bad increase of 48 from the beginning of 2012 when I started at 1,048. January 2012 started off with a bang.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of April 2012)

My family took our annual post-Easter Egg hunt hike at Powder Mills Park, where I spied several gorgeous matched pairs of Wood Ducks along with lots of different woodpecker species. Today happens to be mine, so send some cheer my way!

Hybrid Teal Hotness

In February 2012, a gorgeous Blue-winged/Green-winged Teal visited Brazos Bend State Park in Texas, much to the delight of local birders. As you can see from Chris’s photo, this is a duck worth seeing. Chris Hirsch let me know that this hot hybrid is back in Brazos.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of March 2012)

Also of note were the Long-tailed Ducks on Lake Ontario, holding on when the other cold-waterfowl seem to have fled. My best birds of this weekend were ones I’ve already admired in recent weeks. The gang of Common Grackles plundering my feeder deserve a nod for their brassy, cacophonous splendor.
