That magnificent predator was too distant for decent photos, so I snapped some of the Long-tailed Ducks on which the owl has been sustaining itself… As for Corey, his Space Coast experience is yielding ABA birds and lifers in buckets. Dive-bombing crows marked its perch on a low roof, which we could view after a bit of trouble.

The gender of this duck drove my decision, since I swore I would not be moved to chase a drab eider hen, even if it would be a life bird. Consequently, I spent lots of time in non-birdy environments. However, I did carve out time for a quick twitch once Corey alerted me to a convenient first-year male King Eider up on Lake Ontario.

On 11 November 2012 I was leaving Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake after a fruitless morning of trying to photograph birds in a snowstorm and poor light when a female Prairie Falcon ambushed this Northern Shoveler on the water not far from the causeway on which I was driving. During my short stay at Big Lake Almaty in June 2012, I was fortunate in that there wasn’t only no snow but an adult Ibisbill instead – no, there were even two newly fledged baby Ibisbills working the pebbles with mom! This leads me to my third twitch for the celebrated Falcated Duck ( Anas falcata ) at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in January of 2012. In September of 2013 there was an Eastern Kingbird ( Tyrannus tyrannus ) seen in Redding, California, less than 30 miles from my home. This was a no-brainer.

I had a great time back in 2012 and even more fun in 2014. Ditto for the feral Muscovy Ducks , though they are a bit less nice. The most likely bird would be Fulvous Whistling-Duck which I tried for and dipped on last year thanks to the refuge that was good for them being closed for hunting on the day that I made the attempt.

That is a big difference compared to the 2,000+ singing males detected in 2012, well above the recovery goal for this species set by the U.S. A curious Laysan Duck takes a stroll at Midway Atoll. Laysan Ducks don’t seem to be as tied to water as other ducks, which makes sense considering the limited habitat available.
