Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes – Coracina novaehollandiae are a common bird species around our home in Broome, Western Australia. They are often nearby and breed locally, but we don’t always have them at the water. The water drips down constantly and many different birds visit throughout the day.

This is not surprising at all due to the fact that we have monitored the Pied Oystercatcher breeding success (or lack thereof ) since 2000 along a twenty three kilometre stretch of beach and it is very rare for any of the sixteen pairs to succeed. This pair of Pied Oystercatchers has been successful on one occasion and that was in 2012.

They have been here for several months and are currently changing into their breeding plumage and fattening up. It won’t be long and we will watch them fly off into the sunset as they make their journey north to breed. Joshua Malbin has been birding in Brooklyn, NY for more than 10 of his 15-plus years doing it so far. A New York City Parks Department contractor just wiped out a breeding population of sparrows in tons of trouble already, on land owned by the parks department that was supposed to be protected as “Forever Wild.”

As you all know, “brown” can be quite good on a bird and it comes in all colours and sizes! One of the best places to find “brown” around Broome is on the highway as you head south as there is wide open country and plenty of fences for birds to perch on. Here we discovered a beautiful bird.

All we do is complain about the lack of migrating birds so far and in New York City if southeast winds are blowing we are nearly despondent because southeast winds mean that the birds are moving north but the easterly component of the winds keep usually keep the bulk of birds to our west.

I was happy to read that the wood stork ( Mycteria Americana ), a bird near and dear to me, was down-sited from the status of endangered to threatened species. No, in fall there are less birds, mostly those caught out over the lake as dawn broke. Wood-warblers drip from the trees, feed on the boardwalk, and sing at close range.

Over the years that we have birded we have observed some variation in the plumage of birds including a Crimson Finch that wasn’t crimson, but orange. This is very useful if you are looking for a particular bird species or even an individual bird. The plumage was whiter and the bird looked perfectly healthy.

In 2012 we had a lone Little Curlew at our local park and this year it was a lone Little Curlew on Cable Beach. The birds are always more relaxed once the tide has turned and they are no longer being pushed up the beach. One of the Curlew Sandpipers still has quite a lot of breeding plumage across its breast feathers.

I have followed the breeding activity of the Pied Oystercatchers in Broome along Cable Beach since July 2000 when I found the first nest site and the birds have continued to use the same territories, though there have been some partner changes. While at the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival I could not resist making the drive north to Daytona Beach one day to witness the awesome gull fly-in from the dump to the beach. Laughing Gulls numbering well over 10,000 in number form the bulk of the birds on the beach in Daytona Beach but this bird was weird.

On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. The website gives you an idea of the birds you can hope to encounter and there have been ongoing studies taking place since 1986.
