Corey found himself at the northern edge of Carolina Chickadee territory and was rewarded with that species in song. My second twitch, during the winter of 2011, was also in the area of McArthur where an American Tree Sparrow ( Spizella arborea ) was spotted during a Christmas Bird Count. And Luke called it to species within ten seconds of putting his eye on it. I have had very little experience with Brown Booby , and by very little experience I mean that I had only ever seen one, the long-staying individual that graced Cape May with its presence back in 2011. I successfully spotted a pair of Australian Painted Snipe on Grant’s birthday 24th April 2011 and I only mention the date, because that is significant to the situation. So many questions can be asked of this mystery species. The Painted Snipe Project was established in 2001 to address the lack of knowledge on the species.

The Common Raven is found across the northern hemisphere and because of this huge range and its large and growing population it is considered a Species of Least Concern by BirdLife International. Clark’s Nutcrackers are a Species of Least Concern according to BirdLife International because of their large range and large and apparently increasing population. If you look closely at the bird in the image above you will notice that it is banded.

Richard Fried spent 2011 doing a New York State Big Year and managed to top the record of 350 species which was only set in 2008 by Scott Whittle. Richard totaled 352 species, an impressive number, by seeing almost all of the regularly occurring New York birds and the vast majority of the rarities that showed up in 2011.

Frigatebirds (Fregatidae) Five species of frigatebird ply the planet’s tropical skies and seas. Ringer Cormorants and Shags (Phalacrocoracidae) Cormorants are more speciose than other families in the order; 30-40 species range widely on every continent and many islands. On October 15-16th, 2011 Nikon Birding teamed up with Hawk Mountain and Cabela’s to host a blow-out weekend focusing on raptors. This weekend was meant to draw kids into the Hamburg, PA Cabela’s to experience birds in a up-close and personal kind of way. These kids must have felt as if they were on Jeopardy or something.

Both are declining species who have attracted the attention of birders and conservationists, and both are hanging on, showing the remarkable spirit that I think characterizes New Yorkers throughout the state. Neither is Gyrfalcon, and I’m hoping we will see much more of both species so Corey will have to write an expanded 2nd edition.
