This last year of the twenty-teens was a monumental birding year for me. I saw 863 species of birds, bringing my life list to 1,820. I birded Uganda, which was my first time on the continent of Africa. Such travel brings a lot of birds and the 863 species I saw this year is the most species I have ever seen.

I just enjoyed a lightning strike visit to NYC for family and fun, then endured the trip back home. Considering that we’re also celebrating Memorial Day here in the States (which extends our weekend a full day) I’m tempted to declare the soaring adult Bald Eagle I spotted to be my best bird of the weekend.

My weekend was full of fall family fun with the highlight, a trip to pick the last of the season’s berries and the first of its apples. The best bird had to be an American Goldfinch pulsing overhead that Mason identified by song… amazing! Frankly, I had no idea he even paid much attention to birds.

The Red-capped Plover family group will move back and forth up and down the beach as the tides rise and fall and try to avoid the vehicles that use our local beaches at this time of year. One of my favourite photos of a Red-capped Plover chick hiding from threats was taken in 2011 and the chick was able to hide in a footprint.
