This last year of the twenty-teens was a monumental birding year for me. I saw 863 species of birds, bringing my life list to 1,820. I birded Uganda, which was my first time on the continent of Africa. Such travel brings a lot of birds and the 863 species I saw this year is the most species I have ever seen.

I’ve been pleased to encounter Pied-billed Grebes in many states and countries, but never perceived the pied-bill from as many dimensions as I did in Texas in April 2011. Take a new look at your most common birds. The setting was the SPI Convention Center on picturesque South Padre Island. Grebes look great coming and going!

After an incredibly wet start to 2018 as a result of several tropical cyclones and other rain events the land remains saturated around Broome and as a result of this there are several bird species breeding that we don’t even encounter in dry years. Our first ever encounter was just over seven years ago near Broome.

I have followed the breeding activity of the Pied Oystercatchers in Broome along Cable Beach since July 2000 when I found the first nest site and the birds have continued to use the same territories, though there have been some partner changes. It is only a short drive out of town to go to the Roebuck Roadhouse, where the Hoopoe showed up in 2011. Already many birds have arrived and no doubt many are thinking of breeding. Within days of the rainfall event there are tadpoles providing a food source and also grasshoppers. There can actually be too much water for ducks!
